All of the female descendants of Clia Foster, at least so far, have a natural streak in their hair. Nearly all of them observe a personal right of passage to get a shooting star tattoo – or in the cases of later generations toward the 22nd century – nanotattoo.
Many of you who read the series have noticed that Greta’s eldest daughter, Clia Daponte, opted to have her shooting star nanotattooed on the back of her hand between her thumb and index finger, rather than the inside of her wrist, like her mother Greta, grandmother Nadia, aunt Lenore, and great-grandmother, also named Clia, and whom she got her name from – having been born exactly 100 years to the day Clia Foster was born. Greta thought it might be good luck, and perhaps she was right.
Clia Daponte chose to have her shooting star placed on her hand instead of her wrist like those before her was for various personal reasons and symbolic meanings. The hand is a highly visible and expressive part of the body, making it an ideal location for a symbol that holds significant importance to her. By having the shooting star permanently placed on her hand, she symbolized her desire to always be reminded of her dreams and aspirations whenever she looks down or gestures, acting as a constant motivational reminder to pursue her goals.
For her, getting the shooting star on a more visible location also served as a bold statement of self-expression and individuality, signifying her willingness to embrace her passions and uniqueness openly - a deeply personal decision she knew she would never regret, driven by the desire for meaningful symbolism and the practical aspects of visibility and self-expression.
Will nanotattoos exist in the near or not-too-distant future as they do in Nobody’s Property in the late 21st century? Who knows? What’s the difference, you ask?
In a sense, they actually already exist, but not as they do in the series. According to https://spectrum.ieee.org/nano-tattoo this article, researchers in Istanbul invented the first nanotattoo technology in 2023. In the future of the Nobody’s Property universe, they are applied by injecting nanomachines at a single point, rather than injecting ink over a larger area, and the nanomachines create a design under the dermal layer – hence why people with nanotattoos rather than traditional ink designs in Nobody’s Property sometimes feel a warm tingle when their tattoos are maintaining themselves,
