The character Alice Matthews in Nobody’s property is named after Alice Miller. I know what many will ask. "Who the f**k is Alice Miller?".
Born Alicja Englard in Poland in 1923 to a Jewish family, Alice Miller barely escaped the Nazis to eventually become a psychologist in Switzerland, and even later in life, as in around the time I was born, write the book "For Your Own Good," which left an indelible mark on the field of psychology and our understanding of the impact of Toxic Pedagogy on adult behavior. We almost never had this beautiful book called “For Your Own Good.”
I am unapologetically anti-spanking and even consider it to be a potential “gateway drug” for other forms of toxic and potentially pedagogy, even Illegal Child Abuse, like beating a child so badly that injury is caused. Spanking is neither currently illegal in my country nor considered child abuse under our laws, no matter what my personal views may be.
"For Your Own Good," published in 1980 (also my birth year), challenges conventional wisdom about parenting and delves into the often-uncomfortable truths about the consequences of authoritarian practices like spanking. In her later live, Miller argued that society's acceptance of spanking, other forms of physical punishment, and emotional abuse as disciplinary tools can have severe repercussions on a person's mental health and emotional stability later in life.
Not only did Miller empower readers to question established norms, like we do today on other topics, and strive for healthier, more nurturing approaches to raising children, she gave Children’s Rights Activists like the late Jordan L. Riak, who founded Project NoSpank, or even myself, a mere pseudo-illustrator who uses computer-generated human forms from Vroid, and can barely draw a stick figure in real life, a really great tool for for combating Toxic Pedagogy. Her work has profoundly impacted therapy and counseling, inspiring therapists to explore the roots of their clients' struggles in early childhood experiences, emphasizing empathy, validation, and understanding as essential components of effective therapy, influencing now two generations of mental health professionals.
In conclusion, Alice Miller's "For Your Own Good" remains a seminal work that challenges societal norms around parenting and fosters a greater awareness of the profound impact of childhood experiences on adult lives. Her insights continue to guide individuals and mental health professionals toward more compassionate and healing approaches to understanding and overcoming the scars of the past. Sadly, she died in 2010.
