In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a tense standoff unfolded between 13-year-old Nadia and her estranged biological grandfather, Percy Barnett, who had just been released from prison, where he’d recently completed a sentence which began the day before Nadia was born.
Though this would be the first and last time they would ever meet, much family strife had led to this climactic moment. Nadia, with a mixture of fear and determination, found herself face to face, pointing a gun at the man who had always been absent from her life until this night, where he had invaded her family home, and now pointed a knife at her mother Clia’s throat.
Nadia summoned every ounce of courage within her young soul, refusing to be paralyzed by fear as she held her father’s antique pistol pointed at the man who had been the source of decades of her mother’s night terrors.
Deep down, she thought she might be every bit as much of a monster as he had been to her mom during her formative years, all that time ago. Percy kept the knife trained at Clia’s throat, refusing to show fear to Nadia as he faced the barrel of the gun she pointed at him. He even tried to taunt her, implying she was either a bad shot, or wouldn’t hit even if she fired the gun, or that the kick from the weapon as she fired it would send her flying backward, perhaps even down the stairs, just as her mother had once fallen down a staircase, leading to the traumatic brain injury Clia still had to this day, in her mid forties.
There would be no reconciliation here, and all three of them knew it. Nadia knew either she or Percy would die that night. She was okay with that.
