Nobody's Property is a fictional story set in a fictional alternate universe of our multiverse. Nadia is a petite mostly dark red haired vigilante, save for a blonde streak on her right side, who kills child molesters, white supremacists, and the occasional politician or televangelist.
There is a rumor out there, propagated by many memes and social media videos, that if you plant endangered plants over a dead body when hiding it, that it is illegal for law enforcement to dig up the endangered plants to recover evidence of a crime. At least in the United States, where Nadia is from, this is totally false. Per 16 U.S. Code § 1538 , it is perfectly legal for the police to dig up endangered plants.
The cops can actually get around having a search warrant if they have sufficient probable cause to suspect a crime is taking place, and to prevent one from taking place. Also, and this is going to annoy a few people who refuse receipt checks at Walmart, but technically the Fourth Amendment doesn’t generally apply on private property either. However, you probably won’t get banned from the store if you simply say “no thanks” and keep walking when they do ask to check your receipt. I’ve tested it several times with no issues. Note that I’m not a lawyer and that is NOT legal advice. No, Walmart doesn’t sell endangered plants.
The memes and TikTok videos stating otherwise are as incorrect as that urban legend that circulates around every college campus, including my alma mater from 2005 to 2009, The University of Toledo, about how if the professor is 15 minutes late, class is automatically canceled. I was actually in a class where a professor was 16 minutes late and a student tried to call him out on this. She ended up dropping out after the first semester of our freshman year anyway.
However, I’ve always thought it might be fun to own a few endangered plants to complement my collection of poisonous plants (mostly sansevieria, sorry, dracaena now. Actually, I’m not sorry – they’ll always be sansevieria to me.)
